Dr. Alwang conducts research on agricultural development, on factors affecting economic prospects for rural areas, and on poverty and inequality in developing areas. He has worked in more than 20 developing countries, providing advice to governments on project design and resource allocations,conducting participatory research with colleagues, and mentoring developing-country students.
He recently concluded a major study for the World Bank that presents options for stimulating growth in poor rural areas of Central America. He teaches a graduate course in dynamic optimization, and an undergraduate course in rural development. He has taught courses in international agricultural development at the undergraduate and graduate levels and authored an award-winning textbook on international agricultural development.
