Montague Demment
University of California


Dr. Demment is a professor at the University of California, Davis and director of the Global Livestock CRSP. As a professor his research program addresses the comparative nutrition and ecology of both wild and domestic herbivores. As director he is responsible for the administration and programmatic leadership of a CRSP that engages 14 US universities, 60 foreign institutions to focus on the role of livestock in the developing countries. He also chairs the International Agricultural Coordinating Committee (IACC) of NASULGC that advocates for agriculture and university participation within USAID, with Congress and the Administration. At UC Davis Dr. Demment led the formation pf the university's sustainable agriculture program and served as director. During this period he also guided the establishment of LTRAS (Long-term research in Agricultural Systems) a 100-year experiment and facility to study the sustainability of Mediterranean cropping systems. He began his international career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia, has subsequently conducted research in East and West Africa and lead consultancies in Africa and Asia. Dr. Dement received BA degree from Harvard and his MS and PhD degrees in Zoology. He then conducted postdoctoral work at Cornell under an NIH fellowship in animal nutrition.
